The scam that keeps working

A supplier’s “new bank details”.

The most expensive trick for small firms is a message that looks like it comes from a supplier or subcontractor, asking you to pay a real invoice into a different account. FraudSMART, run by the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, reported that Irish SMEs lost almost €10 million to email-related scams in 2023.

The defence is simple and cheap: confirm any change of bank details by phoning a number you already had, before any money moves. I set that process up with you, and secure the mailboxes it depends on.
